Rustic and log profiles bring the character of timber-frame and log construction to standard stick-framed buildings. These profiles use dimensional lumber to create the appearance of hand-hewn logs, natural-edge planks, and deep-channel textures at a fraction of the cost and weight of solid log walls.
Channel Rustic
Channel rustic is a dual-purpose profile that works for both horizontal siding and vertical accent paneling. Each board is milled with a rabbeted overlap on the top and a corresponding step on the bottom. When assembled, the overlap creates a deep, rectangular channel (typically 3/8" to 1/2" deep) at each joint line. This channel casts a bold shadow that gives the wall strong directional lines and a rugged, handcrafted appearance.
Unlike tongue-and-groove profiles, channel rustic allows for seasonal wood movement without visible gapping because the overlap accommodates expansion and contraction within the joint. This makes it an excellent choice for unconditioned spaces like barns, covered patios, and exterior walls where humidity swings are large.
We stock channel rustic in 1x6, 1x8, and 1x10 in Western Red Cedar (the most popular for exterior use) and Eastern White Pine (economical for interior accent walls and ceilings). Cypress is available on a made-to-order basis.
Wavy Edge Cedar (Haida Skirl)
Wavy edge siding—sometimes called Haida Skirl or live-edge lap siding—preserves the natural undulating edge of the cedar board rather than trimming it straight. Each board is resawn from the outer portion of the log where the sapwood meets the bark line, leaving one edge with a gentle, organic wave pattern. No two boards are identical.
When installed as horizontal lap siding, the wavy bottom edge of each course overlaps the straight top edge of the course below. The effect is a wall surface that ripples and flows naturally, evoking the hand-split cedar siding found on Pacific Northwest coastal buildings and First Nations longhouses.
Wavy edge cedar is milled from Western Red Cedar in approximately 1x8 to 1x10 widths (widths vary due to the natural edge). Boards are typically 8' to 16' long. This is a specialty product with limited availability—contact us for current stock and pricing. Wavy edge siding requires careful installation with stainless steel ring-shank nails and should be back-primed or stained on all six surfaces before installation.
D-Log Siding
D-log siding creates the look of a full-round log wall using dimensional lumber. Each board is milled with a half-round (D-shaped) convex face and a flat back. When installed, the rounded faces create the appearance of stacked logs from the exterior. A tongue-and-groove joint on the top and bottom edges locks each course together and provides a weather-tight seal.
D-log siding is significantly lighter and easier to install than actual logs. It can be applied to any conventionally framed wall and insulated normally, giving you the thermal performance of a modern wall assembly with the aesthetic of a log cabin. The flat back also eliminates the settling and checking issues that plague solid-log construction.
We carry D-log siding in two face heights: 6" (which mimics a 6" diameter log) and 8" (which mimics an 8" diameter log). Both are milled from kiln-dried Eastern White Pine or Western Red Cedar. Pine D-log siding accepts stain readily for a natural or tinted finish. Cedar D-log can be left to weather naturally to silver-gray or treated with a UV-inhibiting oil to preserve the warm reddish tone.
