Yellow Pine (SYP) is the workhorse of the American lumber industry and one of the most versatile softwood species available. Known for its bold, cathedral-style grain pattern and warm golden-amber color, SYP brings character and warmth that lighter-toned species simply can't match. At Timberline, we carry SYP in premium finish-grade profiles for interior paneling, flooring, and accent applications.
Color & Appearance
SYP heartwood is a rich yellowish-amber to warm orange-brown, with pronounced growth rings that create the dramatic "cathedral" grain pattern the species is known for. The contrast between early and late wood within each growth ring gives SYP its distinctive visual depth. Sapwood is lighter, almost cream-colored. Over time, SYP darkens to a deep amber-gold, developing the warm patina that heart pine antique floors are famous for.
Grades & Profiles
We source SYP in the grades and profiles you need — from C&Better Select to #2 Knotty and beyond. Don't see a grade or profile listed? Ask us. We can mill or source SYP to your specifications.
Common options include:
- Grades: C&Better Select (clear to near-clear), #2 Knotty (sound knots, full character).
- V-Joint Tongue & Groove: Classic V-groove paneling in 1x6 and 1x8. Ideal for ceilings and wall paneling.
- Standard Tongue & Groove: Flat T&G for flooring and subfloor. T&G flooring in 1x4 (3.0" face) and 1x6 (5.0" face), 3/4" thickness.
SYP for Flooring
Yellow Pine is the traditional flooring species of the American South. Its Janka hardness of 870 lbf is higher than Eastern White Pine (380 lbf), giving it measurably better dent and wear resistance for residential foot traffic. The bold grain pattern creates a floor with genuine character — no two boards look alike, and the warm amber tones pair naturally with both traditional and contemporary furnishings.
We offer premium Yellow Pine that provides the bold, cathedral grain and warm amber tones characteristic of classic Heart Pine. True Heart Pine is reclaimed from antique structures; new SYP flooring offers a similar look and develops the same rich, deep amber color over 5–10 years.
Relief Cut Milling
Premium SYP flooring and paneling features a relief cut — a shallow longitudinal kerf milled into the back (unexposed) face of each board. This hidden milling feature releases natural tension in the wood and prevents boards from cupping during severe seasonal humidity shifts. It's an unseen engineering detail that separates premium, mill-direct flooring from commodity-grade products.
